You Become What You Think About
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
This is rapidly becoming one of my favorite verses in the New Testament. It speaks to the type of things we should allow our thoughts, attention, and prayers to focus on. If not controlled, our thoughts have the capacity to dictate how we shape our lives.
If I’m being honest…
Many of us have allowed our negative thoughts to produce self-destructive behaviors. These are the same thoughts that speak ill towards our identity and purpose. Earl Nightingale, motivational speaker and businessman, once said, “you become what you think about.” During this global pandemic, what are you thinking about? How has this affected your faith and your perception of the future? Do you need to speak with one of our pastors about where you are emotionally?
There is no shame in seeking guidance to help you make sense of this giant of a mess. My unsolicited advice is to think of that which brings you comfort, joy, and peace. Don’t neglect the realities of the world, but understand that what’s happening to the world is out of our hands. We can only do the best we can with what we have. Your thoughts are ammunition for a battle that has already begun in your head. Your mind is currently raging war against you, and it’s your sole responsibility to take captive the unrighteous thoughts.
Don’t let the enemy isolate you to the point you feel you can’t talk with someone about what you’re dealing with. You owe it to yourself to seek help when you’re most vulnerable. There is no shame in needing a little extra help processing what’s happening around you. You are loved.
You can do this beloved! Si vis pacem, para bellum, meaning “If you want peace, you should prepare for war”. Declare dominion over your mind, and take back what the devil stole from you.
